When my wife and I decided to buy a house in Beaufort SC, our goal was to find a house we liked a lot, could afford, and was several years old. We wanted a house that was several years old because we new many friends that had gone through the process of having a builder construct their "Dream Home” and that process be filled with stress, cost overruns, and disappointment. A two to three year old house seemed like the right choice since any issues with the house would have been corrected and we would not have to go through the difficult process with a builder that our friends had encountered.
   We though we had found the house in a real estate magazine but when we called we were told it was new construction nearing completion. We liked the appearance so we drove to Lady’s Island where we saw the house and met Brian Ranger, the builder. The house did not have a garage which was a must for us, but Brian told us he was about to begin construction of another house on the lot next door. He showed us the plans and after some thought we asked if we could extend one wall two feet and increase the depth of the garage four feet. He had an engineering and design firm review the request and gave us a price on the new house. We liked Brian immediately and we decided to take the plunge and have him build us a house from the ground up. We were excited and nervous and wary as well.
   The next several months were filled with excitement and fun. Brian encouraged my wife and I to visit the site as often as we wanted. He welcomed and encouraged it. He worked with us in picking and detailed things like plumbing fixtures, lights, ceiling fans, etc. and made the process enjoyable instead of tedious. During the finishing process he was meticulous about getting everything right. We soon realized that while it was going to be our house, Brian also thought of it as his house and wanted everything perfect, what a great trait in a builder. Was the house perfect when we moved in? No, we found a few minor issues like marks on the walls or painting imperfections. He had us make a punch list and he came back promptly and corrected each of our concerns. Our house is less than one year old and I still smile when I look at it because of how good it looks and the friendly dealings with the builders. I do not think our anxiety about entering the new construction market were totally unfounded, we just found a great builder who took great pride in his work and commitment to his promises. Can we recommend Brian Ranger as a builder, Absolutely, without a hint of reservation.
